Summary: Construction began in 1998 and was completed in February 2004.  The eight story hospital includes patient rooms, an emergency department, radiology, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, general surgery, food court, administration, chapel and pharmacy.

Previously the children’s hospital occupied two and a half floors of the medical center but now is housed in a freestanding building comprised of an inpatient tower and an outpatient tower and is devoted exclusively to the healing of children.  The friendly, non-threatening environment is cheerful, colorful and centered around family care and with every detail designed with children in mind.

SWA was engaged early in the design process and assisted the architect with detailing and value engineering signature items such as nurse’s stations, reception desks and specialty items.  Inlaid laminates were used prominently to create themes to simulate swirling ribbons, flowing water and swimming fish all intertwined with other natural elements found in Tennessee.

Each year, one healthcare project is chosen to receive AWI's "Standard of Excellence Award.”  Steve Ward & Associates was honored to receive this award for our work on the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
