Summary: In similar fashion to White Hall  (another project at Union University), SWA got involved as a consultant on this project very early in the design process and eventually became a key member of the construction team as the supplier and installer of the laboratory casework, fume hoods and equipment.  The pharmacy building was a fast paced design/build project.  The process began with meetings with the pharmacy department and design team resulting in a space plan leading to preliminary layouts, equipment schedules and eventually full blown design drawings complete with elevations and equipment details.  Budgets were prepared at various points along the way to make certain the project kept on track.  As the design progressed, plumbing, electrical and mechanical drawings were coordinated with the lab casework, fume hoods and equipment drawings.  During the design of the mechanical system, it was determined high performance fume hoods would help simplify the mechanical system and reduce the amount of air exhausted as well as the owner's utility bills without sacrificing performance and safety.  SWA’s project management and engineering team then prepared specifications, coordinated scope of work with other trades and submitted final drawings for approval.  Prior to production, SWA monitored the construction process to make certain the work of all related trades was coordinated and delivery was made in a timely manner as to keep the project on track.  Once casework delivered, our installation crew worked extended hours and was dedicated to making certain the project was installed right and stayed on schedule.  Changes that were made were incorporated seamlessly into the project.  The final result is a first class, state of the art teaching and research laboratory facility that will serve Union's pharmacy program for years to come.
