Playhouse on the Square

Project: Playhouse on the Square
Owner: Playhouse on the Square
Architect: Morris Planners/Architects
Contractor: Montgomery Martin Contractors
Location: Memphis, Tennessee
Completion: March, 2010

Description: New 347 Seat Auditorium

Scope:

  • Auditorium Seats

Summary: This new theater was designed by John Morris who designed the famed Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, Illinois. The construction of that theater not only gave a proper home for the arts in Chicago but it helped to transform a neighborhood.

During the initial design phase, SWA worked with the owner to put together a custom chair using standard products to create a very unique installation. Eventually, the final decision on the chair was made by the patrons and sponsors of Playhouse on the Square. They were allowed to sit in several different sample chairs and voted for their favorite. The chair chosen was a customized version of the Marquee chair manufactured by Irwin Seating Company.

Here is a link to an interesting video featuring Morgan Freeman talking about the upcoming new facility and how important Playhouse on the Square is to Memphis.
