Summary: After an initial meeting with the architect and owner, SWA was chosen as the laboratory consultant and eventually became the supplier of the casework, fume hoods and equipment. The process began with an assessment of existing facility and a determination of what the owner wanted in the new chemistry lab. In order to hold down costs, we determined existing services were to be used as much as possible but not to the extent of compromising the functionality of the lab. After several meetings a space plan was developed and quickly progressed into casework and equipment layouts. A couple of options were provided for consideration with the final design selected by the owner. A key feature to the layout chosen was the ability of the teacher to circulate around the students tables and teach from the center of the room. Budgets were prepared at key points along the way. Once a layout and equipment list was finalized, SWA worked with Fleming to provide detailed drawings complete with elevations and rough-in dimensions. The drawings and equipment details were forwarded to the plumbing, electrical and mechanical consultants for further coordination. After final drawings were approved and finish selections were made, SWA obtained field dimensions as the final step to ensure everything would work as designed. Delivery was scheduled with the construction manager to comply with an aggressive construction schedule in order to have the lab ready when school opened. Once the casework and equipment arrived, installation went smoothly as SWA coordinated our scope with the other trades on the project. The project was completed on schedule and within budget.
